Vanessa Williams is credited as the first African-American woman who became Miss America in 1983. She then pursued a career in singing and acting. She received Grammy Award nominations for her albums The Comfort Zone and The Sweetest Days. She also excelled as an actress and she is remembered for her roles as Wilhelmina Slater on Ugly Betty and as Renee Perry on Desperate Housewives. In 2008, Syracuse University granted her a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
