Phylicia Rashad is an actress and singer who is most famous for her role in The Cosby Show. She was born in Houston, Texas, on June 19, 1948. She received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Harvard University. Rashad was first discovered on Broadway, such as Dreamgirls and in The Wiz. In 1978, she released a disco album, Josephine superstar. Under her credit, she won a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play.
Rashad’s role in the revival of the play A Raisin in the Sun also made her the first African-American winner of the award. As for her role in the TV adaptation of the play, she received an Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Television Movie, Mimi-Series or Dramatic Special award from NAACP. She later starred in Tyler Perry’s film For Colored Girls, which got her an award for Outstanding Supporting Actress from the Black Reel Awards.
